The bag I kept reaching for

I bought it for one weekend away. It never really made it back into the cupboard.

Six little things I noticed between packing on Friday morning and getting off the train on Sunday.

Weekend Notes · Australia · 6 min read

I have owned enough weekend bags to know how this normally goes. You buy one because it looks sensible, use it twice, then push it into the back of a cupboard until the next overnight trip. This one went differently.

I first noticed the colourful camper-van design because it was impossible not to. Purple mountains, bright flowers, little mushrooms, a sunset across the roof and floral handles running over the whole thing. It looked more like something collected on a trip than something bought to carry one.

I thought it might be a little too colourful for me.

Then Friday morning arrived, I put it on the bed and started packing.

Friday morning. Cardigan, book, toiletries and the usual “just in case” extras.

That was the first surprise. Once it was open on the bed, I stopped thinking about what it looked like and started noticing how useful it was.

I could actually see what I was packing. Nothing disappeared into some narrow black hole at the bottom.

By the time I zipped it shut, I had clothes, toiletries, a cardigan, a book and everything else I normally convince myself I will not need.

I bought it because it made me smile. I kept reaching for it because it turned out to be genuinely useful.

1

Packing it did not become a wrestling match

The opening is wide enough that I could pack properly rather than pushing everything through a narrow zip. Folded clothes went in flat, the smaller things stayed where I put them, and I could see what still had room around it.

More importantly, the quilted sides had enough give to accommodate the last few things without making the whole bag look like it had lost an argument.

2

It looked even better once it was packed

This sounds like a small thing until you have owned one of those weekend bags that looks perfectly respectable empty and turns into a sagging lump the moment you put clothes in it.

Packed, this one still looked like a bag.

The quilting kept some shape while remaining soft enough that I was not hauling a miniature suitcase around.

3

I never had to wonder which bag was mine

Most travel bags seem to come in three colours: black, darker black and the navy one you accidentally mistake for black.

There was absolutely no losing this one.

The camper van, flowers, mushrooms and sunset made it instantly recognisable. Even from across the room, I knew exactly which bag I was looking for.

And somewhere between the front door and the station, I realised that was surprisingly useful.

There is no mistaking this one for somebody else’s black holdall.

4

The handles made more difference than I expected

A pretty bag is no good if you regret carrying it after five minutes. This was the part I had wondered about most.

The floral handles run around the body of the bag rather than looking like an afterthought stuck onto the top.

With the bag packed for the weekend, I could pick it up, walk with it and move it from hand to hand without constantly fiddling with it.

By the time I reached the station, I had stopped thinking about the bag entirely, which is probably the nicest thing you can say about luggage you are carrying.

5

Soft luggage makes much more sense on a train

This is where I understood the quilting.

A hard case is wonderful right up until you need it to fit somewhere that is almost, but not quite, big enough.

The quilted bag had enough structure to hold everything together, but enough softness to sit beside my feet without becoming an obstacle.

No wheels rolling away. No hard shell knocking into the seat.

Just put it down, sit down and get on with the journey.

6

The strangest thing happened when I came home

Normally, getting home means unpacking the bag and returning it to whichever cupboard it came from.

This one stayed by the door.

Then it came out again.

An overnight visit. A weekend away. Things to take to family. The sort of little trips that do not justify a suitcase but somehow require more than a handbag.

That, more than anything, is why I ended up liking it.

It is not a bag that needs a holiday before it becomes useful.

The colourful bag, against the weekend bag I used to take

I have had plenty of practical-looking bags over the years. The difference became much clearer once I actually travelled with this one.

My old weekend bag

Dark and easy to mistake for someone else’s

Sagged once it was properly packed

Narrow opening made everything harder to find

Mostly lived in the cupboard

Looked purely practical

The quilted camper-van bag

Colourful and instantly recognisable

Quilted body keeps some shape while staying soft

Wide opening makes packing easier

Useful for overnights and shorter trips

A bag that actually feels like part of the trip

About the bag

The part that caught my attention was the artwork. The part that made the bag useful was everything underneath it.

The colourful camper-van scene runs across the quilted body, with flowers, mountains, mushrooms and floral handles turning what could have been another ordinary piece of luggage into something you can recognise immediately.

And despite all that colour, it still does the ordinary job a weekend bag needs to do: open wide, carry the things you need and travel without becoming a nuisance.

About the price

The Wildvana is currently $59.99, down from $119.99.

That was what finally made me look twice. It was colourful enough to feel special, but practical enough that I could imagine using it for far more than one weekend away.

Some bags disappear into the cupboard until the next proper holiday.

This one makes sense for the smaller trips too: a night with family, a train weekend, a short road trip, or simply the sort of overnight where a handbag is not enough and a suitcase is too much.

If your current weekend bag is another dark holdall you tolerate rather than enjoy, this is worth a look.
