A Letter From Perth Boutique

I Have Looked At A Great Many Summer Tops. The Zamma Is The One We Stock, And The One I Reach For Myself.

On the six things I insist on before a linen top goes on our site, how the Zamma compares to the tops you have been buying, and why it is this price during the end of season sale.

A woman wearing the Zamma white linen top on a sunny Perth verandah

I am Maggie, and choosing what goes on the Perth Boutique site is my job. I have had a great many summer tops through my hands, and most of them do not make it. The Zamma is the one I am gladdest we found.

It is the one I reach for myself on the hottest days. It is the one women stop each other about in the shopping centre car park. And of everything in the end of season sale, it is the piece I most wanted to write to you about.

I should tell you what I was looking for in the first place. For years I watched the same thing happen to women our age. The summer tops made for us fell into two piles. The first looked lovely on the hanger and felt like a sauna the moment the heat found you. The second felt comfortable and made you look like you had given up. I never accepted that a woman had to choose between the two. The Zamma is the closest thing I have found to an answer, and there are six things I will not compromise on before a linen top goes on our site.

1

Real 100% linen that breathes.

Not a blend, and not the polyester they sell you as linen look. The real thing, woven to breathe, so it stays cool when the heat sits heavy over Perth for a week at a time.

100% LINEN

The listing says it plainly, and we checked it: 100% linen, not a linen-look blend. That one word is the difference between a top you can wear in February and one you cannot.

2

An open collar and one wooden button.

I wanted a neckline that flatters without fuss. A soft open collar that sits right on a real neck, and a single large wooden button, the small detail that turns a plain top into something women ask you about.

THE NECKLINE

An open collar takes the eye upward and leaves the line of the neck alone, which a high round neck cannot do for you. The button is the only ornament on the whole top.

3

Sleeves that cover the tops of your arms.

Without adding a single degree of warmth, and made to roll softly to the elbow on the days you want them shorter. It is the thing women our age thank me for most.

THE SLEEVES

A light linen sleeve shades the arm and leaves a gap for air to move underneath, which is why it is cooler in the sun than a bare arm, not warmer.

4

A cut that skims, and never clings.

Loose where you want it loose, so the air moves underneath, instead of grabbing the one part of you that you would rather it left alone.

THE CUT

Relaxed through the body is a specification, not a compliment. It means the fabric is not in contact with you, which is why it does not cling when the heat comes up.

5

Colours that do not go see through in bright sun.

I have been caught out by that before, and I was not going to let it happen to you, least of all in the white.

IN BRIGHT SUN

This is the one to check for yourself before a hot day out. Hold it up to a window. A linen worth buying does not disappear when the sun is behind it.

6

Six soft colours that go with what you own.

White, beige, green, black, red and navy blue, each one chosen to sit with the trousers and jeans already in your wardrobe, so the Zamma earns its place from the first day.

SIX COLOURS

Six is the number where a top stops being an outfit and starts being a wardrobe. The white, the beige and the green are the three already showing as almost sold out.

The Zamma, against the tops you have been buying

You can find a summer top for sixty dollars almost anywhere. I know, because before we found the Zamma I bought a great many of them, trying to find the one that did not let me down by lunchtime. Here is the difference, laid out plainly.

Most $60 Summer Tops

A blend, or polyester sold as linen look

Clings the moment the heat comes up

Goes limp and thin after a few washes

Bare arms, or sleeves that add warmth

Goes see through in bright sun

The Zamma

Real 100% linen, stated on the listing

Skims, and lets the air move underneath

Softens with every wash instead of wearing out

Sleeves that cover the arms, no extra heat

Opaque, even in full Perth sun

I refuse to put a summer top on our site that asks a woman to choose between staying cool and looking like herself. That is the whole reason the Zamma is there.

Why the Zamma is this price now

The end of season sale is on, which is the simple answer. The Zamma is $83.99, down from $199.00, and there is an Afterpay arrangement at four payments of $21.00 if that suits you better than one go.

I will be plain about the rest of it. We sell direct, from here, with nobody in the middle taking a cut, and that is most of the reason a 100% linen top can sit at this price at all rather than the hundred and fifty you would pay for the same fibre with a label on it. There is no trick in it that I have found, and I went looking.

If choosing what goes on this site has taught me anything, it is that a woman who tries the Zamma once usually comes back for a second colour. That is the quiet bet I am placing in writing you this letter.

WHY I KEEP COMING BACK TO IT

I have the beige, and I went back for the navy. Between the two of them I have barely reached for another top since the spring. It is the simplest my summer wardrobe has ever been, and the coolest.

It is the linen top I am gladdest we found. I would rather it go to women who will wear it than sit folded in a box.

If you have ever wanted a summer top that keeps you cool without clinging, this is the one I would put in your hands myself, while the colours are still in stock. The white, the beige and the green are already showing as almost sold out.

About the writer. Maggie chooses what goes on the Perth Boutique site. She lives in Perth, wears the beige Zamma more than she will admit, and will not put a linen top on the site unless it is linen all the way through.
